History of Pan

Greg Secor (lead pan) is currently an instructor at Grand Valley State University, and Hope College where he directs the Percussion Ensembles, the Steelband (GVSU) and teaches courses in music literature. Secor is a member of the percussion section of the Kalamazoo Symphony, and performs regularly with the Grand Rapids Symphony. He is active as a steeldrum performer with Pangea, and is half of the Coalescence Percussion Duo with Kalamazoo-based percussionist Judy Moonert. In addition, he performs with The Opus 21: Music Without Boundaries Group (www.opus.org).

Secor received the Bachelor of Music degree from Western Michigan University, where he studied with Judy Moonert, and the Master of Music from the University of Cincinnati's College / Conservatory of Music where his teachers were Benjamin Toth and Al Otte.

Tim Church (double seconds) received a bachelor of Music Performance from Grand Valley State University, and a Masters in Percussion Performance from The University of Akron. Tim is currently employed at Black Swamp Percussion, managing dealer and artist relations, as well as organizing marketing activities. He is also active throughout West Michigan as a steel drum performer with his band Pangea, providing entertainment for a wide variety of events. Tim also enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter.

Alex Hamel (bass guitar) is a multi-instrumentalist working professionally in rock, jazz, classical, and musical theater settings throughout Grand Rapids area. He graduated from GVSU in 2005 with bachelor's degree in Music - Jazz Studies. He has been a part of the pit orchestra for many shows throughout West MI, including A Chorus Line, Nine, the Sound of Music, the Rocky Horror Show, and currently, Grease at the Grand Rapids Civic.

Alex is an accompanist for modern dance classes for the GVSU dance department, and has also studied steeldrums, Middle Eastern percussion, and Balinese gamelan. He has been performing with Pangea for around 10 years.

Ryan Busscher (drumset) has been playing percussion for over fifteen years. He is currently the Percussion Instructor at Allegan High School as well as the drummer for a local Grand Rapids band, Dr. Jones.

Ryan writes the percussion scores for a number of local high school marching bands. In his spare time he enjoys off roading and spending time with his fiancé.
